* * * *

Syd was walking on cloud nine as he walked into his house. He made his way across the floor, stripping his clothes off as he went. He tossed his shirt aside as he reached the patio door and flung it open. Stepping out into the warm sunny day, he toed his shoes off and unzipped his pants. Pulling them down and stepping out of them, he grabbed his socks and whipped them off, too. Stepping up to the edge of the pool, Syd dove in, luxuriating in the warm water as it caressed his skin.

Syd broke through the surface with a big smile on his face. He laughed out loud and began to do laps. Today was a good day. His appointment with the doctor went fantastic and he couldn’t be more overjoyed. Nothing was going to ruin his day today. Not after the news he received from the doc. No cancer. No tumor. His brain was clear of anything that could kill him. The only thing he had was a double ear infection deep down in his ears. The doctor prescribed antibiotics and eardrops. Then he told Syd that by the time he finished all the meds, he should be okay.

Syd swam laps for almost an hour before his arms started to burn and he needed a rest. He grabbed onto the float nearby and pulled himself up. Relaxing back, he closed his eyes. His phone began to ring. Syd ignored it. He didn’t want to talk to anyone. He just wanted to spend the rest of the day alone and enjoy life. Maybe head out to the beach and catch a few waves. Maybe he would drive up the coast to that little hamburger shack he and Shane found a few years ago. The place was small, but it had the most delicious hamburgers. Maybe he would take his bike out for a drive and head over there for dinner.

His phone started ringing again. Syd sighed and tried to ignore it, but the damn thing just kept ringing. Someone had to keep calling for that to happen, otherwise it would go to voice mail and he could check it later. Maybe it was important? Syd paddled his way over to the edge where he had left his pants then dug through the pockets. He pulled his phone out and slid a thumb across the screen. It showed that his mother was calling. “Shit.” This was the last thing he needed today.

Not that he didn’t love his folks, but they never really loved him. Darren was always their favorite, their golden child, and they had always let him know it. He was in a really good mood right now and he didn’t want his mother ruining it. He ignored the call, but the damn thing rang again. Syd sighed heavily in resignation. She wasn’t going to stop until he answered. He pressed the screen and put the call on speaker. “Hi, Mom.”

“Sydney. What took you so long to answer the phone?”

“I was in the shower, Mom.
